This is how to correctly set up pool balls for 8-ball pool. The pool balls are racked this way in both casual and professional settings. A red and yellow in the two back corners and a red at the front. An easy way to visualise it is the tick formed by the yellows.
You might see some people rack it with two balls in the bottom row switched however this is an old style and method. Both professionals and casuals in pool halls and pubs (and homes!) across the UK now rack it the way pictured above and below.
Whether reds & yellows, spots & stripes, or any other combination of colours and styles they are racked the same way. Whatever the ball at the front (typically and pictured red) also goes in the bottom-left corner.
A neat tip to rack up: arrange the balls in the triangle and then remove the black 8 ball. The layout will still hold its shape as you slide the triangle and balls across the pool table cloth. Often pool tables will have a small black dot indicating where the black ball should be. Slide the triangle and balls till you can see the dot through the gap where the black ball was. Pop the black ball back in its position and carefully lift the triangle. Voila!
If you’re having trouble viewing the images here it is in text format (R = red, Y= yellow, 8 = black):
