It can be daunting to buy a pool table – there’s a lot of choices and we want to make it easier for you. Here’s some basic information to help you get started. If you have any questions at all feel free to contact us – there’s no enquiry too silly or small!
Slate or MDF?
While MDF tables are cheaper (£500-£1000) the surface will become uneven and worn very quickly and the whole thing needs replaced. Slate tables typically start around £1500 but can withstand years and years of heavy use extended even further by getting the slate reclothed.
What Size Pool Table?
For English pool 7ft is the standard. Almost every table is also available in the more compact 6ft. A regulation American pool table is 9ft however most models are available in 8ft or 7ft alternatives. We have a calculator to see exactly what size table & cues your room can support.
English Or American Pool?
English pool is played on smaller tables, with smaller balls & smaller pockets. It is typically played on a slower wool cloth which has a nap/direction to it. American pool table is played on larger tables, with larger balls & larger pockets. It is played on a wool-nylon blend faster cloth that is worsted (no nap).
Regular Pool Table Or Diner?
Pool dining tables have thinner cabinets that allow you to get your legs under them. They also come with hard tops that match the finish of the table and transform it into a dining table. They still have slate beds and ball returns to offer the same playability as a regular pool table.
What Type Of Cloth?
Wool cloth is the traditional cloth for English pool, it is typically slower and has a directional nap. Fast wool cloths are available by making the cloth very thin however they are more delicate. Worsted cloth is a blend of wool & nylon that plays faster and is more durable. It is typically found on American pool tables but is great for beginners or kids on an English pool table.
